And the beat goes on!

Introducing the newest additions to our family! I'll post a couple of pictures a day (when the Internet cooperates), but I'll hold off on clear views of their precious little faces until we're just a bit further along. Trust me, they are cute, cute, cute!

I love that Sully was in pink on our first day together. So was Max.

Glenn's metro-sexualness is on full display -- he is just as happy here as he is when Fina demonstrated some great hand/eye coordination when he was tossing the ball with her. We predict that she will have no problems standing her own ground when going toe-to-toe with Max.

I'm signing the paperwork to accept Sully's referral....

and Fina's referral.

Or, given that the paperwork is in Russian and Kazak, I also my be signing our house over to the baby house. I do look happy regardless, don't I?!

It’s Saturday morning in Ust, and we are getting on a roll here, people. It should feel like Groundhog's Day any time soon. We had a great Friday – although we still don’t have our sleep figured out. Fortunately, visiting two orphanages while hauling a cranky toddler along doesn’t really require astute mental abilities, but rather sheer perseverance, and caffeine really is a cure-all for many ills.

Stating the obvious here – it is so very different to visit with a 4-year-old than it is a 1-year-old. We’re thrilled that the order of our visits have been switched, so that we meet with Fina in the morning when our energy levels are better. One of us tries to engage with her at all times -- while Max is hanging on the other. My wise friend Pam suggested that trying to get everyone to engage at once was fruitless -- she coined Glenn as "the golden ticket" -- the person who could keep Max occupied while I bonded with our children." Except -- Max refuses to leave my side. So, instead, Glenn is doing most of the bonding! It's actually been really great to observe our children getting to know their Papa -- that is, when I can actually see something other than Max's face in front of mine. :-) I have full confidence that Fina and Max will be fast friends some day, just as I have full confidence that "it ain't gonna happen in Ust."

Fina will look at us if we speak to her, but she rarely utters a word while we are in the room with her. That’s okay … it will come with time. She will engage with either one of us (again, usually Glenn) in a partner activity, like tossing a ball, or sending the Batmobile back and forth across the floor. She loves coloring, and we brought her a little hair care kit (I am going to have to learn this lingo!!) and a little pink purse (thank you, Janet!), which absolutely thrilled her. We also got to see her recite her numbers when the social worker came in to visit with us, and it was so precious to hear her little voice confidently repeating her numbers. Our coordinator told us that the Director says she has come out of her shell in her group, and is now talking up a storm about the Mama and Papa that come to visit her each day, bearing special gifts. Whatever it takes, whatever it takes.

I managed to skip what has been a mandatory nap on Friday and I headed to the market while my boys rested. I feel so cocky and confident in Ust – I think I owe that to Matt and Suz, who dragged us everywhere with them when we were here together 2 ½ years ago. (Thank you, Ruleys!!!) I picked up several little things for our room – not only have I unpacked, but I am thoroughly nesting in our little suite. I even bought little baskets to hold our snacks from home. One of the smartest decisions we made (and we’ve committed our share of not-so-smart decisions, a listing of which is saved for a future post) is reserving a two-room suite at The Shiny River. In hindsight, we’re going to need that extra money (like, to buy a new car!), but having the extra space of a front room and a bedroom has kept us from body-slamming one another on a regular basis.

Our visits with Sully are short and sweet – one hour each afternoon at 4. While some people might be really disappointed with that, we are fine with it. We know that our real bonding will happen at home with him, and he is so easy going. The hour flies by as we play with stacking rings, cars, and any number of other things that we brought for him. He is stubborn and makes the funniest little faces (true smirks) when he doesn’t want to engage with us – but that little half-smile is almost always present. I think he might be an old soul already – can’t wait to see him emerge.

We had time for a quick dinner in the room, and them we were off to the hockey game in the arena up the street. It was the Ust “B” team playing what I think was the “B” team from Pavlodar. The tickets were about $2 a piece, and there were probably about 500 people scattered around what seemed to be a 5000 seat arena. Mitch and I both embraced it as if it were an NHL game – I’m sure the other 498 people in the stands (including our spouses) are still talking about those two crazy Americans who were yelling and cheering. Max spent the first period asking if it was over, the second period watching Olivia on his ITouch, and the third period paying close attention and announcing at the end, “I WUV hockey.” I think he would have been asleep in Glenn’s arms on the walk home if it were not for the fact that he was facing frostbite. It is cold, cold, cold here, but it felt so great to get out and about with the other two families. They are so loving and caring towards Max, too – I just can’t stop stating how lucky we are to be traveling with them!

A few additional random tidbits:

  • Max has watched the same 13 episodes of Little Bear seemingly thousands of times. When he is not watching them, we are frequently re-enacting one of the episodes. I am typically Mama Bear, Max is Papa Bear, and Glenn is Little Bear. I downloaded other shows for him, but he is obsessed with Little Bear. If that gives him comfort to get through this month, so be it. (One of the smart decisions we made – two laptops and a portable DVD player).

  • Along the lines of DVDs, I am working my way through Big Bang Theory – I’ve never watched it, and I was especially intrigued after one of the actors recently won an Emmy. I’m now part-way through Season 1, and would code the purchase of three seasons a “good decision”. Glenn is watching multiple things, including Johnny Carson highlight DVDs. Even when we were totally stressed at the beginning of this week, we had some great belly-laughs watching various animals poop on Johnny’s head. “Hey, our life’s not so bad – there could be a marmot crapping on our head right now."
  • It is cold. Really really really really cold.
Hugs to all from Ust!

Hey, I finally take stalking honors today thanks to ongoing jet leg and occasional inconvenient bouts of insomnia - see what you have to look forward to when your time is over in Ust? :) At least Nicholas is sleeping soundly when I am not - which, as you know, is a definite plus.

LOVE to see those first shots of the kids bonding with the Golden Ticket, er, Papa, in all his metro sexuality. No question their cuteness is evident despite the lack of a full frontal view. And as for you becoming the proverbial golden ticket, hey, whatever works, right? You will laugh hysterically someday when I show you video of our bonding visits in which so many times all you can see is Nicholas head or hear his voice overpowering whatever is transpiring. So, I understand, sister, I understand.

Glad to hear Max came around to Hockey before it was all over. Nicholas was enthralled, but then again our experience was vastly different with a sold-out arena and everyone screaming "GOAL" for two hours as the A team took on Moscow. Thankfully we were on the other side of the arena from the scantily dressed cheerleaders or I may have been fielding questions about them instead. But it's all entertainment nonetheless and close by. Did you happen to buy Max a hockey jersey? I bought one for Nicholas to save for when he gets older - provided it doesn't disintegrate by then. Would be so cute to have a photo of the boys together in their Ust Torpedo jerseys someday!

Amazing to hear how the weather has drastically changed seemingly right after we left! And for that I am thankful!

Hugs!

So cute!!! I'm so excited for you. I think having a girl would be awesome.
I remember struggling with our visits. They seem like a great idea but 2hrs/2ce a day roasting in a tiny room with people seemly watching your every move while trying to keep a 1.5yr old on a tiny rug had it moments of no fun!
You sound like you are doing really well. I hope soon you will all get some good sleep.

Its snowing here today in Cincy (sat. dec.4th)so basically its the same here as in Ust!! LOL

Sounds like you are getting in a routine over there. While reading your posts I keep thinking that if and when Andy and I ever travel to adopt we will not be bringing 2 boys. We are looking into switching to a different country so hopefully there won't be as much time in country so it will be more feasible to leave the boys home with Grandma and Grandpa. Congrats again on the new additions to your beautiful family!

I can tell even without seeing their faces that little Floyd and Floydetta are absolutely beautiful!! And I thought the same thing while signing all those papers in Russian with no translation -- I could be signing my soul over to these people!!! Hope you are enjoying the Big Bang Theory ~ I love that show, especially Raj and Sheldon!! Best wishes for continued happy bonding! ~Erin

I'm going to have to re-read your post again! So happy for you, but I'm a little disappointed that they don't have the "RED COUCH" anymore.

Please tell the lady who runs the preschool that Alyona is doing great! We really liked her and she cherished Alyona, and we promised to keep her in the arts. Tell her that Alyona is dancing in the Nutcracker this Christmas and has a solo in our church children's choir. Also she and Andrey together sang a concert last at a tree lighting because they are both in their school choir! Also they have been involved in arts camps (visual and performing) every summer and she sang in the school choir last year too. We do lots of arts and crafts projects and she is REALLY good at making jewelry. Thank you! I know it will make her happy.

Will you be coming home during the appeal time? If so I'll have Alyona make something for the ladies at the Big O and mail them to your house to take with some photos. I know I'm asking a lot.

OMG the paragraph about your gorgeous kids didn't post! THEY are gorgeous (what we can see) - and yes they have Karina's hair cut~

one more thing... if you can find a really nice doll and stuffed teddy that she can dress up and play with - that is Alyonas most cherished toys that we brought with us. They mean more to her every day. She remembers them as the first dolls mommy and daddy gave her.

I have to tell you one of the things I have loved most about having a girl is watching my husband with her. Okay, tears just came to my eyes as I typed that, but it's true. Seeing Glenn with your girlie brought me pretty similar joy. Don't get me wrong, Mark loves our boys, but truth be, they are mommas boys and while Sadie loves her mommy, oh how her daddy has such a specialy special place. Her brothers are almost as dear to her, almost, :) When I heard her tell Tanner the other day that she was going to marry him when she grew up, oh, melt my heart. Wait until Glenn, Max and your little guy let her paint their toenails after having a tea party. Bringing a girl in to our male dominated world as brought me so many unforseen heart warming moments. I figure it will stay that way until our girls are tweens based on what I've experienced with tween girls on fb as a mom of a boy. We'll need to start a tween girl support group when the times comes since Fina is only a couple months older then Sadie, :)

Anyway, Can't wait to see a picture with all of you together. Have a great day! Love, Kristan

So excited for you all. I think Groundhog Day will be a welcoming comfort after your first several days you've had there! We don't need the drama, right?!!! :)

It is fun to see a little bit of the kids. And I am glad Max wuvs hockey! We also enjoyed a hockey game when we were there, they had a game in the summer and it was a blast. I still remember singing along to all the American music they played between periods.

Love your posts! Hopefully you can keep them coming and that the Internet stays steady for you!

So good to hear from you. How exciting to see some photos of the kids! They are adorable. I LOVE the big grin on your face as you sign the paperwork. : ) It certainly sounds as though you are on your way to hitting the stride of the "Kaz Groundog Day" routine soon. You certainly have a great attitude and set of expectations for your visits. Although this process is VERY different from your first time around, it does help to have been through it before, don't you think?

How great that you have other families to spend time with. The other families helped us tremendously during our time in Astana. I really think that one of the hardest parts about our trip to Shymkent last year was not having another family in country to hang out and commiserate with. Sounds like you had fun at the hockey game, besides the frostbite on the way home.

Glad to hear things are going well. Good luck staying warm. Thanks again for the post!!

Your two little ones are darling. Glenn looks quite taken by little Fina. I can totally see Max in your face, making sure mama knows who's number one. Ha. Then I can also see you screaming up a storm at the hockey game. We need to get you to one of the Greenville Derby Dames (local roller derby team) bouts. They would really appreciate your lungs and enthusiasm.

Love your updates— and keep 'em coming.

Hugs,
K

You bring back such memories of our trip to Ust and really do have such fond memories of our trip there. We went to the hockey arena and saw womens volleyball. One of the teams was from New Zeeland and they were staying at the Shiny River. It was really nice to have so many other English speaking people in the hotel.
I know what you mean when you talk about the other families you are traveling with. We also were there with 2 other families and it was such a blessing to have them there.

Dang . . . one day missed of the Blog stalking and I miss the pictures.

So cute . . . I love Sully's haircut and can't wait to see her little face. Fina looks to be enjoying Papa, too.

Great hockey game story - glad to hear you're nesting and really starting to enjoy your time there. I could not be happier :)

It sounds like you are hanging in there and having an adventure! I wish we could have had a 2-room suite as that would have helped Miras sleep better. We don't travel without one reserved these days! We also did the bonding switch off though I'll bet that is even a bit more challenging bonding with more than one child. You can try some games that they could play together like tossing a balloon. Also, if you have one, we set Miras up with a DVD on the portable player (we didn't let him watch any other times) at the BH and he got pretty absorbed in that many times. I imagine that entertaining yourselves in general is more challenging when it is so cold outside too. Can't wait to hear more!

I'm late to the game!I just realized that you were back over there in Ust so I wanted to catch up. I diligently read your blog from your first trip as we are firends with Matt and Suz - we live in Tampa. We went to Ust in Jan 2009. I love the Holly Hobby (?) shirt Sully is wearing. Sabina my youngest wore that shirt when we first met her and many times after! So is Sully in Room number 4 - the Kazakh room? I guess I will have to read more on your blog to find out!
